Pass value from combobox to server side code

Hi, I would like to pass the selected value of a combobox to server side code by adding runat=sever to the <div> tag that holds the widget. However “.value” is not a property of that element on the server side code (.value is property on <input>). Must I use <div> for combobox widget? Or is there a property to access the value on the sever side?
