In general, is there a way to attach a custom filter to a filter row filter element?

I have a grid with some checkbox columns.  I would like to have each checkbox filter in the filter row behave as follows:

• If the filter’s checkbox is checked, filter by the column (show only those rows where the column value is checked).
• Otherwise, the filter displays the unchecked state with the filter behavior being ‘do not filter on this column’.
